This is part 2 in a seven (7) part series.

First principle: Mindset.

It does not matter how much you spend or what goodies and tools you have, if you do not have the right mindset you will never make it through any scenario. On the flip side, with the right mindset it does not matter what you do not have as you will find a way to survive in spite of the lack of assets.

I am reminded of a story of a railroad worker. His job was to go by and inspect railroad cars in a yard. One evening while doing this he had climbed inside a refrigerated car only to have the door slide shut, locking him inside. Due to his experience he knew that the temperature in these cars could get down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Faced with the possibility of freezing to death he made every effort to try attracting the attention of someone to rescue him. Unfortunately for him, it was late evening, and no one was around. After some time he realized that no one was likely to find him in the vast rail yard and no one would miss him until the next day. He then pulled out some paper from his pocket and began to ‘chronicle’ his last moments, describing how cold it was getting and his last words to his family. The next day after noticing the worker missing a search was conducted and they discovered his body in the rail car. The investigation showed that the cooling unit in this specific rail car was not functioning. The worker had died merely because he believed he was freezing to death.

Mindset is the number one principle we need to develop before anything else and has no monetary cost associated with it.

In our next post, the Second Principle.
